Emergency Medical Technician Basic Course Offered at Mobridge Regional Hospital
JUL 30, 2009This course provides the first phase of training in pre-hospital medicine. It includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level with an ambulance service or other specialized service. Specifically, after successful completion of the program, the student will be capable of performing the following skills:
- Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care.
- Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition.
- Lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury.
- Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the EMT job description.
Specialty courses, including Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP) and AHA-CPR for Health Care Providers will be added to the course to enhance professional development.
The Mobridge Regional Hospital Program follows the Department of Transportation Guidelines consisting of the required 110 hours of class time including lectures and practical skills. The course also offers an additional 20 hours of instruction to enhance the student. The course also requires an additional 20 hours of Emergency Department observation and Ambulance ride time.
Pre-requisites: Must turn 18 years old within a year of course completion. (Must be 18 years old to complete the National Registry Exam)
Course Dates: October 1, 2009 - February 6, 2010. Monday and Wednesday evenings 6-10pm with an occasional Friday evening class and two Saturday all day courses. (PHTLS and PEPP will consist of two all day Saturday and Sunday courses also)
